Challenger Division
The Challenger Division Little League Baseball program in Smithfield is for children with special needs. This team enables boys and girls with physical and mental disabilities, ages 5 – 18 or the completion of high school to enjoy the game of baseball along with millions of other children who participate in this sport worldwide.
The Smithfield Division practices baseball skills and we play games against ourselves and other Challenger Divisions in RI. Children on the team play at their own level. Some may need assistance to hit a ball off of a tee, while others may independently hit a pitched ball. Everyone plays and has fun and is part of our team. Our team has their picture taken on opening day, participates in the opening day celebration, and our season is from April to June – practicing and playing 1 game a week on a Sunday afternoon. Each child needs to buy baseball pants and a glove and the Smithfield Little League provides our team with shirts, hats and socks. We also have all the equipment we need through the Smithfield Little League. We also have High School students assist us at each practice/game as buddies to the special needs players. If you are a high school student and you are interested in helping our team – please feel free to contact us. This is a volunteer position and counts toward community service obligations you may have for school or church. All High School students receive a letter at the end of the season for their community service hours. Sue & Cliff Baron Coaches Smithfield Challenger League Division Sportsrway@cox.net 232 – 0954
